President Ruto Keeps His Word as Harambee Stars Eye CHAN Glory

Kenya’s CHAN 2024 journey has been powered not only by footballing grit but also by visible, unwavering support from the country’s top leadership. President William Ruto has stepped forward as one of the Harambee Stars’ biggest backers, and true to his word, fulfilled his cash reward pledge after the team’s historic 1–0 victory over DR Congo.
Ahead of that opening match, Ruto met the squad at Pullman Hotel and promised KSh 1 million for every win, a gesture meant to motivate the team and affirm national confidence. After the full-time whistle blew at Kasarani, the President acted swiftly — delivering on the KSh 1 million reward per player and technical team member, amounting to KSh 42 million. The payment, confirmed by Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, was disbursed the following day through the Ministry of Sports.
President Ruto’s involvement has set a tone for leadership that connects deeply with Kenyan fans. His presence in the stadium, alongside other high-ranking leaders like the former prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga and CS Murkomen, added weight to the occasion.
The Harambee Stars didn’t just win a match — they won the belief of a nation. Coach Benni McCarthy even noted the motivational impact Ruto’s visit had on the players, saying the squad felt “seen and supported” at the highest level.
With the Angola fixture looming, Kenya stands just one win away from reaching the CHAN 2024 quarterfinals for the first time. And it’s clear this run is about more than just football — it’s about a country rallying behind its own. With Ruto’s leadership, fan energy across Kenya, and the Stars’ renewed confidence, the nation is building not just a team, but a footballing legacy.
